Despite global awareness of air pollution in our technologically advancing world, there still are things that we can do to clean the air without using technology. For example, fueling your car at night will save gas, because when exposed to heat, it will expand, thus making you go back and get gas sooner. “Avoid using gas-powered lawn and garden equipment.” because thy are outdated, and known to break down, thus releasing pollutants in the air (epa.gov). And even if you are one to try to help the environment, cleaning the air doesn’t mean buying a “$55,600” electric car (caranddriver.com). Another thing that would help save the environment would be biking to work. Around “71.6% of adults aged 20 and over are overweight.” (singlecare.com) Not only would you lose weight and be happier when dopamine is released, but if you were to drive an SUV five miles to work each way, for five days, 170 gallons of gas would be wasted, and two tons of CO2 would be released. Yet, if we really wanted to stop this problem, Greenwich might just be the place to start.
As we all know, to get in a good habit, you should start young, so it is fresh in your mind. The main target for my solution is Central Middle School. My idea is to have Mr. Trungadi make an announcement about how biking can save over 80 gallons of gas and over 2 tons of CO2. He would also mention how if the ride is under seven miles both ways, then there is no need for a car. I also plan to promote biking by doing it myself as well. I will plan to bike to school at least one day per week, considering I live three miles away. In the end, my goal is to have people biking, because it will save the air.
