I was so lucky to have the chance to interview Lisa Wang, who is a grad student at the University of Colorado Boulder, under the wing of Dr. Shelly Miller. I had asked her the following questions:
1. What was the inciting event that got you into studying Air Pollution?
2. In what ways does air pollution interest you?
3. What actions are you taking to lessen air pollution in your town, state, and/or country?
4. Who or what motivates you to help stop this ongoing problem in our community(s)?
I had learned that she had initially taken a class on air pollution control, and she had really liked it. The class had talked about mitigation strategies. Another reason that she wanted to learn about air pollution is because most of her family lives in China, where they have a history of bad air pollution levels. Ms. Wang said that she was interested in air pollution because it was a growing concern and that when something grows, there is more to study about it. She currently works with the Dept. of Public Health in Boulder, CO. Ms. Wang had mentioned that she hopes for more funding in order to conduct more studies. Something interesting that I had learned is that the Natural Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) only sets standards for adults when it comes to air pollution, so she is doing all fo this for children, who are one of the groups more at risk of getting a heart or lung disease.
